For years, the 40, 000 or so people of Burji village In Doguwa Local Government Area of Kano State have been without a school for either Islamic or Western education.
The only structure that was used as a school by the community, who are mostly peasant farmers, was a dilapidated structure that was no longer habitable.
This caused thousands of school-age children to go without education and consequently took to hawking, child destitution and migration/wandering in urban areas.
Concerned and Disturbed by this situation that has no solution at sight, an indigene of the community, Alhaji Badamasi Shu’aibu Burji, through his foundation, built a 20-classroom school, provide free tuition, books, uniforms and food to all the 5, 200 pupils of the village that enrolled in the school.
The school is fully equipped with teaching and instructional materials and other facilities, with qualified teachers and supporting staff.
Born with no silver spoon, 52-year-old Badamasi Burji opted to establish a charity foundation in his name, which also sensitizes the people on the importance education and to send their children to school.
“I hate to see school age children roaming the village streets, doing nothing, while they were supposed to be in school like their equals in other communities,” remarked.
Badamasi Burji who is into Printing, Publishing and Catering businesses in Kano, Abuja and Lagos, where hundreds of people are also gainfully employed.
The Foundation, which was established in 2015, has also established Islamiyya Schools and sponsored 109 students of the Primary School (98 girls and 11 boys) to different junior Secondary schools to further their education.
There are plans to establish a study centre of the National Open University in the area.
