Following an attack by unidentified gunmen, over 240 detainees escaped from the Medium Security Custodial Centre (MSCC) in Kabba, Kogi State.
Mr. Francis Enobore, the spokesman for the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCOs), confirmed the event in a statement on Monday, claiming that the attack occurred at midnight on Sunday.
According to the statement, the attackers entered the detention center heavily armed and quickly engaged the guards in a fiery battle.
It was also revealed that the Comptroller–General, Haliru Nababa, has ordered an immediate recapture procedure and a thorough inquiry, even as he heads a team to investigate the issue.
The statement added, “The Comptroller-General also appealed to the general public to provide security personnel with beneficial intelligence that will assist in the recapturing of the escapees.”
Kabba Medium Security Custodial Centre (MSCC) was founded in 2008 and has a capacity of 200 people, according to Solacebase.
Meanwhile, there were 294 inmates in detention at the time of the invasion, with 224 being pre-trial detainees and 70 being convicted criminals.
