HOTPEN – Supporters of the new military coup in Burkina Faso have stormed the French Embassy in Ouagadougou, the capital of the country.
The security forces fired tear gas at the protestors in the Embassy compound after the military carried out the second coup in 2022 in the country.
Thousands of protestors accused the leader of the overthrown military government of hiding in the embassy to prevent the coup d’état against him.
The people set fire around the office wall and threw stones, causing the French soldiers who pulled up from the roof of the building to fire tear gas at them.
On Friday, the country of Burkina Faso opened a new chapter in its politics where a military officer, Captain Ibrahim Traore, announced the overthrow of the government of the first coup leader, Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba, for allegedly suppressing jihadist fighters.
The coup is the second in less than a year in Burkina Faso in the Sahel, a region where most of its countries are fighting jihadist fighters.
The announcement made by the new president, Ibrahim Traore, on Saturday accused Damiba of “hiding in the French camp in Kamboinsin to cause trouble for our troops”.
Later on Saturday, Damiba denied the allegations but did not elaborate on his first statement after his overthrow.
In a statement he released on Facebook, Damiba called on the revolutionaries to “come to their senses and not throw the country into a useless war”.
The Chief of Staff of the Burkina Faso Army said that there was no coup, the internal conflict was caused by the soldiers and they are negotiating to find their interests.
On the 16th of January, 2022, Damiba came to power after criticizing the government of Roch Marc Christian Kabore for not suppressing the jihadists.
On Saturday, France, which previously claimed Burkina Faso as a colony, refrained from hosting a coup d’état or hosting an official of the country’s government.
