Zamfara anti thuggery committee arrested over 60 political thugs since the commencement of political activities ahead of 2023 general election in the state.
This was made known by the state chairman of the committee, Hon. Bello Mohammed Bakyasuwa while fielding questions to newsmen in his office today.
According to him, some politicians such as former minister of information Alhaji Ikra Aliyu Bilbis, Tsafe local government area secretary among others were also been arrested by the committee who were allegedly sponsored thugs to cause unrest in the state.
He added that some of the accused sponsors for political thuggery were at large, adding that the committee is still searching for their whereabout to take necessary action against them.
Bakyasuwa pointed out that all the over 60 arrested political thugs have been handed over to the appropriate authorities for further action.
“Some of them were taken to court by the appropriate authorities after arresting them by our committee and we are still looking for those alleged sponsors of political thugs who were at large in order to arrest them and face the wrath of the law”. He said
According to him, the anti thuggery committee under his watch will not relent it’s efforts by ensuring that any forms of thuggery, drugs abuse and other related irregularities have been contain for peace to thrive in the state.
He further revealed that already the state government under the leadership of governor Bello Mohammed Matawalle had approved the recruitment of additional 2000 anti thuggery operatives with a view to assist the security agencies in the fight against criminality in the state.
” As I am talking to you now, we received over 6700 applicants out of which 2000 will be employed, 1000 will be selected for volunteering after successful training undergoing as approved by the state government “. He added
He enjoined politicians regardless of what political party they belong to desist from sponsoring youths in thuggery during electioneering campaign and elections, warning that his committee will dealt with anyone found wanting irrespective of his political affiliation.
