United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has described breastfeeding as crucial not only for the children but also to the lactation mothers.
Chief, UNICEF Field Office Kano, Mr. Rahama Rihod Mohammed Farah made the disclosure during the flag-off of 2023 World Breastfeeding week held in Dutse, the Jigawa state capital with a theme “Enabling Breastfeeding-Making a Difference for Working Parents”.
Mr. Rahama Rihod explained that the annual event serves as a powerful platform to raise awareness and garner support for breastfeeding with each year centered around a specific theme, added that the theme of this year’s as mentioned focused on Breastfeeding and work.
His words:-“Breastfeeding is not only a natural and beautiful act but also crucial for the health and well-being of children and mothers, it is essential to reflect on the progress we have made so far and the strides that still lies ahead in supporting our working parents”.
According to the Chief UNICEF, Field Office, requested the Jigawa state government to address and promote breastfeeding support in the workplace through extend paid maternity leave for government employees from the current 3-6 months, prioritize the need of working parents through provision of lactation rooms/creches in all MDAs.
He further called on traditional, religious and community leaders, CSO’s, media and everyone to support breastfeeding, “we can create a supportive environment that enables breastfeeding, fosters working life balance and ensure the health and happiness of our families”. Rihod concluded.
