The Kebbi State House of Assembly has amended the bill for a law to amend the local government law of 2008 and for other matters connected 2024 and extended the tenure ship of the elected Chairmen and Councillors from two to three years in office in order to strengthen the local government system in the state.
It also amended and passed into law, the bill for the establishment of the Kebbi State Local Government Service Commission which will repeal and re-enact the Kebbi State Local Service Board Cap 87of 1996 and other related matters.
The two crucial bills, presented by Hon. Salihu Muhammad Dangoje, Chairman of the Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, and Hon. Muhammad Abubakar Lolo chairman committee on security and general administration, have scaled third reading and been passed into law at the floor of the House yesterday in Birnin Kebbi.
Speaking with Journalists shortly, Hon Salihu M. Dangoje Chairman House Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs said, the first bill seeks to amend the Kebbi State Local Government Law 2008, specifically to elongate the tenure of elected local government council members.
This amendment aims to provide stability and continuity in local government administration, allowing council members to implement long-term development projects.
While, the second bill establishes the Kebbi State Local Government Service Commission, repealing and re-enacting the Kebbi State Local Government Service Board and this new commission will be responsible for overseeing the management of local government staff, ensuring professionalism and efficiency in service delivery.
According to him, the passage of these bills marks a significant milestone in the state’s efforts to reform its local government system.
The amendments and establishment of the commission are expected to bring about improved service delivery, accountability, and transparency in local government administration.
He noted that the House’s commitment to strengthening the local government is a testament to its dedication to grassroots development and the well-being of Kebbi State citizens.
Dangoje also emphasized that the bills’ passage is a significant achievement, and their implementation is eagerly anticipated to bring about positive change in the state’s local government system.
