In the wake of the devastating floods that have ravaged 16 Local Government Areas in Bauchi State, claiming 21 lives and destroying properties worth over N22 billion, the state government has swung into action to mitigate the effects of the disaster.
Led by the Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management, Hajara Wanka, the government has established an inter-ministerial committee to assess the damage and develop a comprehensive plan for recovery.
This move is in line with a directive from the Federal Government to assess the magnitude of the disaster, which has affected several states.
The committee, chaired by Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, Aminu Hammayo, will comprise relevant commissioners and be monitored by the Secretary to the State Government, Barrister Ibrahim Kashim.
This multi-faceted approach ensures a thorough assessment of the damage and a coordinated response to the disaster.
Furthermore, the government has approved the release of funds to rehabilitate damaged infrastructure, including culverts, access roads, schools, and public buildings. This swift action demonstrates the government’s commitment to restoring normalcy and supporting affected communities.
In addition, the Commissioner for Housing and Environment, Dallami Ahmad Kawule, has announced a crackdown on structures built on waterways, which exacerbated the flood disaster. This move aims to prevent future occurrences and ensure that the state is better prepared for natural disasters.
