The Adolescent Girls Initiative for Learning and Empowerment (AGILE) project, says it has adopted proactive measures to enhance inclusion of persons with disabilities in its programmes in Gombe State.
Dr Amina Abdul, the Project Coordinator in the state, said this at a stakeholders’ engagement meeting, on Thursday in Gombe.
She said the consultation meeting with the Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) and Non-governmental Organisations (NGOs), aims to gather inputs and recommendations from stakeholders to improve the disability inclusion, especially in education and economic empowerment programmes.
Abdul said the initiative would streamline integration of the generated feedback and recommendations into the AGILE’s work plans to foster inclusivity.
The coordinator also expressed concern over spate of girls working as farm labourers, adding that the trend formed a significant barrier hindering girls’ education in the state.
In a paper presentation entitled: “Challenges to learning for adolescent girls with disabilities,” an academic, Zubairu Suleiman, highlighted some of the challenges to girl’s education to include physical barriers, lack of specialise teaching resources and learning materials.
The girls, he said, are being restricted to accessing education because of their physical limitations.
