As the Edo State gubernatorial election approaches, the Gombe State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) urges all stakeholders to prioritize peace and democratic values.
We recognize the critical role that free, fair, and credible elections play in strengthening Nigeria’s democracy. Therefore, we call on the electorate, political parties, security agencies, and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to work together to ensure a hitch-free and violence-free electoral process.
Key Principles for a Peaceful Election:
- Respect for the Rule of Law: Adhere to the provisions of the Electoral Act and other relevant laws guiding the electoral process.
- Tolerance and Civility: Engage in constructive debates and avoid inflammatory rhetoric that may incite violence.
- Transparency and Accountability: Ensure that the electoral process is transparent, and all stakeholders are held accountable for their actions.
We appeal to the good people of Edo State to exercise their civic rights responsibly, shun violence, and promote peaceful coexistence. Let us work together to consolidate Nigeria’s democratic gains.
