The Jigawa State Government has responded to media reports claiming widespread defections from the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state, describing the reports as baseless and fabricated aimed at misleading the public.
In a statement issued by the Governor’s spokesperson, Hamisu Mohammed Gumel, “it was clarified that reports of APC members defecting to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ahead of the 2027 elections are false and an attempt by opposition elements and propagandists to tarnish the party’s image”.

The statement accused some disgruntled APC members, particularly those associated with former Minister of Defence, Muhammad Badaru Abubakar, of spreading false narratives to create the impression of internal conflict within the APC.
Contrary to the circulating reports, the statement said the APC in Jigawa is gaining strength, with thousands of members from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) defecting to the APC since Governor Umar Namadi took office.
The statement highlighted the “Government and People” initiative launched by the governor, which has strengthened government-citizen engagement, allowing the public to assess government projects and provide input, including shaping the 2026 budget.
Through this initiative, over 10,000 opposition party members have joined the APC, including party leaders from ward to local government levels.
The statement listed prominent politicians who have defected to the APC, including senior PDP and NNPP figures, significantly weakening opposition parties in the state.
It noted that only about 20 individuals have left the APC, mostly due to personal reasons such as failed ambitions for positions or nominations.

The government emphasized that the APC enjoys strong support from key stakeholders, including the Jigawa State Council of Elders, traditional rulers, and religious leaders, ensuring political stability.
The statement urged the public to disregard unfounded reports, affirming that the APC remains strong and continues to gain popularity ahead of the 2027 elections.
