The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Gombe Branch, has raised concerns over the severe congestion at the Gombe Custodial Centre, revealing that the facility, originally designed to accommodate 390 inmates, is currently housing more than 1,000.
The association made the disclosure during a visit to the custodial centre as part of activities marking its 2026 Law Week celebration, where it also facilitated the release of nine inmates.
Speaking with journalists after the visit, Chairman of the NBA Gombe Branch, Bar. Alhassan Mu’azu, said the outreach was aimed at interacting with inmates and correctional officials, understanding their challenges and identifying ways to improve the administration of justice.
He described correctional facilities as key stakeholders in the justice sector and stressed the need for continued collaboration among relevant institutions.
“We came here to identify with them, listen to their concerns and see how we can contribute towards addressing some of the challenges confronting the facility,” Mu’azu said.
He disclosed that nine inmates from different parts of the state regained their freedom through the intervention of the association.
“Through the efforts of the NBA, we were able to secure the release of nine inmates in commemoration of the 2026 Law Week. Some of the beneficiaries are from Nafada and Billiri local government areas, while others are from Gombe,” he said.
Mu’azu, however, expressed worry over the level of overcrowding at the custodial centre.
“From the information made available to us, this facility was built to accommodate about 390 inmates. Today, it holds over 1,000 inmates. This clearly highlights the enormous burden on correctional authorities and the urgent need for sustained support,” he added.
Also speaking, the Deputy Controller of Corrections in charge of the facility, Victor Odafe, commended the NBA for its continued partnership and support to the Nigerian Correctional Service.
He appealed to government and other stakeholders to provide more assistance to correctional facilities to enable them cope with increasing demands.
“We appreciate the support we receive from time to time, especially during festive periods, but more assistance is needed. Correctional facilities should continue to receive the attention and support given to other sectors,” Odafe said.
The NBA also donated relief materials to inmates as part of its humanitarian outreach during the Law Week celebration.
