Hajia Hauwa Umar Aliyu, popularly known as Hauwa Birniwa, is an accomplished education and development specialist, community advocate, and public servant whose career reflects an unwavering commitment to advancing education, sustainable development, and social inclusion.
She hailed from Birniwa Local Government Area of Jigawa State, has distinguished herself through academic excellence, impactful leadership, and dedicated service to humanity at both national and international levels
Haj. Hauwa holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Bayero University Kano (BUK) and a Postgraduate Diploma in Community Health from AMREF University, Nairobi, Kenya. She further strengthened her academic credentials through postgraduate studies in Education, Health Promotion, and International Development at University College London (UCL), before earning a Master’s degree in Sustainable Development from the University of Sussex. She is currently pursuing a PhD in International Education and Development at the University of Sussex.
With extensive experience in education, health, and international development, Haj. Hauwa has worked closely with development partners, particularly the United Kingdom’s Department for International Development (DFID), serving both as a full-time staff member and consultant. Her work has focused on improving the lives of vulnerable populations, especially nomadic and pastoralist communities across Nigeria, through evidence-based and community-driven interventions.
Driven by a passion for grassroots development, she is the Founder of the Iya Hauwa Foundation (IHF), an organization dedicated to empowering rural, nomadic, and pastoralist communities in Northern Nigeria through education, healthcare, and life skills development.
Her commitment to public service extends to several strategic leadership positions. She serves as a Board of Trustees (BOT) Member of the Hadejia Strategic Development Forum (HSDF), where has contributes to the advancement of Hadejia Vision 2050—a long-term socio-economic development blueprint for the Jigawa North-East Senatorial District.
She is also a trustee of the Civil Society Organizations in Hadejia Emirate, the Arewa Development and Support Initiatives (ADSI), and the Hanan Buhari Foundation (HBF). Additionally, she serves as Secretary of the Fulbe-Global Development Rights Initiatives (FGDRI), where she continues to champion inclusive development, social justice, and the empowerment of marginalized communities.
In recognition of her wealth of experience, dedication, and exceptional leadership, Haj Hauwa currently serves as the Honourable Commissioner representing Jigawa State at the Revenue Mobilization, Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC), where she contributes to promoting fiscal equity, sound resource management, and national development.
Through her distinguished academic achievements, professional excellence, and unwavering dedication to public service, Haj Hauwa Umar has established herself as one of Jigawa State’s outstanding development leaders. Her lifelong commitment to education, community empowerment, sustainable development, and nation-building continues to inspire hope and create lasting opportunities for present and future generations.
