The death of His Royal Highness, the late Emir of Gumel, Alhaji Dr Ahmad Muhammad Sani II, CON, has brought an important chapter in the history of the Gumel Emirate to a close.
For more than four decades, the late Emir occupied the traditional throne, providing leadership and serving as a symbol of peace, unity, dignity and stability. His long reign touched generations of people and established a legacy that will remain an important part of Gumel’s history.
But the end of a long reign also marks the beginning of another chapter.
The question now is how that legacy can be preserved while giving the next generation of leadership room to respond to the realities of its own time.
In this regard, the background and traditional experience of Dr Lawan Ahmad Muhammad Sani deserve attention, particularly his years of service as Chiroman Gumel and Hakimin Bosuwa.
Leadership through service
Dr Lawan Ahmad’s experience within the traditional institution has given him an opportunity to understand leadership from close range.
As Chiroman Gumel and later Hakimin Bosuwa, he interacted with communities and had the opportunity to appreciate some of the challenges confronting ordinary people.
Such experience is important in traditional leadership.
A traditional institution is not sustained by titles alone. Its strength depends largely on its relationship with the people.
A leader must be able to listen to the farmer, understand the concerns of the trader, respect the elderly, encourage the youth and provide a platform for reconciliation when disputes arise.
Leadership is often tested in these ordinary moments — when a family needs reconciliation, when a community seeks intervention or when a young person needs guidance.
It is through such responsibilities that a leader develops an understanding of the people he serves.
The influence of a father
For Dr Lawan Ahmad, the transition carries an additional dimension: he is the son of the late Emir.
That relationship gives him a unique understanding of the institution and of the demands that come with traditional leadership.
The late Emir Ahmad Muhammad Sani II presided over Gumel for more than four decades. During that period, he became associated with qualities such as humility, patience, peace and concern for his subjects.
For many residents, the Emir was more than a traditional ruler. He was a father figure and an important source of stability.
His passing has therefore created both grief and a sense of responsibility for those who must continue the work of the institution.
A legacy is not a copy
However, carrying forward a legacy does not necessarily mean attempting to reproduce the previous ruler.
Dr Lawan Ahmad does not have to become his father.
Every generation brings different challenges, and every leader has a distinct personality and approach to leadership.
What matters is the preservation of the values that made the late Emir’s reign respected.
Humility, fairness, patience, wisdom, accessibility, peace and commitment to unity are values that can transcend generations.
If these principles remain central to the new leadership, Dr Lawan Ahmad can honour his father’s memory while building a legacy of his own.
The institution is bigger than the individual
The Gumel Emirate represents much more than its throne.
It embodies history, culture and tradition. It includes communities, families, elders and youths, as well as scholars, farmers, traders, professionals and other citizens whose lives are connected to the institution.
The person who occupies the throne therefore assumes a responsibility that extends beyond personal interests.
He inherits not only an institution but also the expectations of the people and the responsibility of preserving it for future generations.
This makes previous experience within the traditional structure particularly valuable.
Dr Lawan Ahmad’s service as Chiroma and Hakimin Bosuwa has exposed him to the practical side of traditional administration and, importantly, to the principle that leadership begins with service.
A new chapter for Gumel
The passing of the late Emir has understandably generated sadness among his family, subjects and admirers.
Yet traditional institutions, like other enduring institutions, must continue beyond individual lives.
One chapter has ended. Another is beginning.
For Dr Lawan Ahmad Muhammad Sani, the challenge will be to combine respect for the past with an understanding of the present.
That will require remaining close to the people, listening to the wisdom of elders, engaging young people and working to preserve peace and unity across the emirate.
His ability to maintain accessibility and build trust will be particularly important.
The strongest traditional institutions are those in which the people feel connected to their leadership.
A personal prayer
As a local writer who has taken time to consider Dr Lawan Ahmad’s background and years of service, my sincere prayer is that he will be guided by wisdom and strengthened by the goodwill and prayers of his people.
May he inherit from his father not only a respected name, but also the qualities that gave that name meaning.
May he listen before he speaks.
May he unite rather than divide.
May he remain accessible to the people.
May he protect the dignity and traditions of the Gumel Emirate.
May he give hope to the youth and respect to the elderly.
And may Almighty Allah grant him the wisdom, patience and strength required for the responsibility ahead.
The late Emir Ahmad Muhammad Sani II left behind a significant chapter in the history of Gumel.
Dr Lawan Ahmad Muhammad Sani now has the opportunity to write the next chapter — not by becoming his father, but by preserving the values that made his father’s leadership respected while bringing his own qualities to the service of the people.
May his tenure be peaceful and successful.
May it strengthen unity and promote progress in the emirate.
And may it be remembered with pride by generations yet to come.
May Almighty Allah forgive the late Emir Ahmad Muhammad Sani II, grant him Aljannatul Firdaus and comfort his family and the people of Gumel.
May Allah guide, protect and bless Dr Lawan Ahmad Muhammad Sani and grant him a long, peaceful and successful service to his people.
