The Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) has clarified issues surrounding the electricity supply to Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH) following reports alleging that a disconnection at the hospital led to the loss of lives.
In a statement issued on Monday by KEDCO Head of Corporate Communications, Sani Bala Sani, the company explained that supply to the hospital had already been restored.
It said the outage resulted from an ongoing exercise to separate the hospital’s main campus and health facilities from its staff residential quarters.
According to KEDCO, the main hospital and health facilities are connected to the top-priority 33kV Zaria Road feeder, which enjoys an average of 22 hours of daily supply under Band A services.
However, the company noted that AKTH management has repeatedly insisted that residential homes remain on the same feeder as critical health facilities, a situation it said compromises the stability of supply.
“Several attempts to separate the two lines were resisted by the hospital management, and this unfortunately caused a severe fault that led to the recent outage we had consistently sought to prevent,” the company stated.
