A Final-year Law student at Bayero University, Kano, Amina Mustapha Umar, won third place in a poetry competition organized by the Chief of Army Staff to mark the 2026 Nigerian Army Day.
Amina a 23 year old, from Gwangwazo ward in Kano Municipal Council stood out among 327 contestants from across Nigeria. She received her award in Port Harcourt on July 4, 2026.
Amina’s achievement is a source of pride for Bayero University and Kano State and Nigeria at large, as she was the only representative from the North-West to reach the finals.
Hotpen reports that, a total of 327 participants participated in the competition, which began online in April 2026. After screening and a Google Meet interview, Amina qualified among the final 10.

Professor Zahra Kwaghe of the University of Calabar, who chaired the panel of judges, stated that Amina demonstrated exceptional talent and emerged third in the contest.
The awards were presented on July 4, 2026, where the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General W. Shuaibu, alongside the Chief of Army Civil-Military Relations, Major General Musa Auwal Etsu Ndagi, presented prizes to the outstanding winners.
This achievement is a great source of pride for her family, Bayero University Kano, the Kano State Government, and the people of the state, especially as she was the sole representative from the North-West Zone among those who clinched top positions in the competition.
