Federal Government has reiterated its commitment to expand land administration reforms, Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Engr. Dr. Muttaqha Rabe Darma, stated this.
He stated this during the Housing and Urban Development Ministry Day at the 20th Africa International Housing Show (AIHS).
Dr. Darma was represented by the Director of Public Building and Housing Development, Mr. Temitope Pemi, said no policy aimed at providing affordable housing can succeed without a transparent, user-friendly, and secure land administration system.
He explained that land is the foundation for housing delivery, urban development, economic growth, and ensuring social cohesion within the community.
According to him, the rapid rate of urbanization in Africa has further worsened the housing deficit and increased pressure on infrastructure. He said most low-income earners and workers in the informal sector face challenges in obtaining land title documents, accessing housing loans, and meeting land ownership requirements.
The Minister further stated that the Nigerian Land Titling, Registration and Documentation Programme will expand land registration and make it easier for Nigerians and Nigerians living abroad to access housing loans.
He further revealed that the ministry is continuing to improve land administration through the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology, digital land mapping, and modern land registry data.
In his remarks, the Director of Lands and Housing Development, Collins Alabi, said the goal of providing affordable housing cannot be achieved without making land readily available, with complete documentation, proper planning, and infrastructure.
