The Gombe State Internal Revenue Service (GIRS) has called for stronger collaboration with the Shongom Local Government Council to improve revenue mobilisation and administration in the area.
The Executive Chairman of Shongom Local Government Area, Hon. Modi D. Shelpidi, received the GIRS delegation during a visit to the council.
The visit was aimed at strengthening institutional cooperation between the state revenue service and the local government, particularly in the areas of revenue generation, tax compliance and effective administration.
The delegation, led by the Executive Chairperson of GIRS, Hajiya A’isha Adamu also reviewed areas of cooperation that could help expand the tax base and reduce revenue leakages within the local government.
Speaking during the engagement, Adamu stressed the importance of collaboration between state and local government authorities in improving internally generated revenue.
She said effective revenue administration was essential to providing sustainable funding for infrastructure and essential services, urging stakeholders to support measures that would promote voluntary tax compliance and improve revenue collection.
She also highlighted the need to embrace technology, strengthen internal processes and deepen engagement with taxpayers and other stakeholders as part of efforts to improve the state’s revenue system.
Responding, Shelpidi thanked the GIRS delegation for the visit and expressed his administration’s readiness to cooperate with the service in strengthening revenue mobilisation in Shongom.
He said the council would support initiatives aimed at improving tax awareness, compliance and accountability, noting that increased revenue would enhance the council’s capacity to implement development projects and provide essential services to residents.
The chairman also pledged to promote transparency and professionalism in the council’s revenue administration while working with relevant government institutions to improve the revenue base of the local government.
He commended the GIRS leadership for its efforts to reform revenue administration in the state and assured the delegation of the council’s support.
