Aminu Yar’Adua, the son of late former President Umaru Yar’Adua, was remanded in prison on Thursday by a Magistrate’s Court in Yola for allegedly killing four people in an auto accident in Yola.
On June 23, 2021, Yar’Adua, a 36-year-old American University of Nigeria (AUN) Yola student, was charged with causing death by dangerous driving.
According to the police, First Information Report (FIR) was presented in court by the prosecutor, Insp. Zakka Musa, the accused crushed six people while speeding along Yola bye-pass on June 23, 2021.
The victims were all from Sabon Pegi, Yola South Local Government Area, and four were killed and two were injured in the accident, according to the court.
According to the FIR, “Aisha Umar (30), Aisha Mamadu (32), Suleiman Abubakar(2), and Jummai Abubakar (30) died in the accident, while Rejoice Annu (28) and Hajara Aliyu (27) sustained injuries.”
The relatives of late Aisha Umar, Suleiman Abubakar, and Jummai Abubakar had demanded N15 million in compensation from the defendant, the prosecuting officer told the court.
When the FIR was read to the defendant, as the prosecutor had requested, he denied committing the crime and described the allegation as false.
The prosecutor then requested that the case be adjourned so that he could duplicate the case file and send it to the Department of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for legal advice.
Jummai Ibrahim, the Magistrate, granted the prosecution’s request and adjourned the case until August 19, 2021, for further consideration.
He then ordered Aminu Yar’Adua to be remanded in custody until that time.
According to previous reports, Aminu narrowly avoided lynching the day of the accident when a mob descended on him for killing four pedestrians and injuring two others.
Yar’adua, who is said to be an off-campus student of the American University of Nigeria, was saved thanks to the quick intervention of police officers on the scene of the accident (AUN).
