The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has stated that it will use the industrial procedures provided by labor laws to defend employees’ rights in the face of an increase in electricity tariffs.
Mr. Ayuba Wabba, the NLC President, stated this in an Abuja statement on Wednesday.
Wabba stated that Congress wanted to bring attention to rumors that there were new plans in the works to allow power distribution companies (DisCos) to raise their pricing.
“In light of this, we dismiss continued to talk about a rise in the electricity tariff as just that.
“However, we believe it is prudent to put you on notice in the event that the government confirms the rumors by allowing a rise in the electricity tariff.
“Organised Labour will have no choice but to use the industrial procedures provided by our laws to defend workers’ rights,” he stated.
Wabba stated that the NLC has written to remind the minister that on September 28, 2020, the Federal Government/Organised Labour Committee on Electricity Pricing decided to limit further increases in tariff through the Federal Government/Organised Labour Committee on Electricity Tariff.
He stated that the committee resolved to freeze the power tariff until its work was completed and its report was approved by all of the committee’s leaders.
