As the founder of the world’s first worldwide peace day, A non-governmental organization, the Nigerian Peace-Revival and Reconciliation Foundation, and another NGO, the Nigerian Women’s Foundation, have kicked off the celebration of 2021 Peace Day by organizing a variety of sports activities across the country, all aimed at uniting the youth and promoting the spirit of togetherness. Pastor Yohanna Buru, national president of the Nigerian Peace Revival and Reconciliation Foundation in Kaduna, believes that sport can promote peace, tolerance, and understanding by bringing people together from different cultures and beliefs. According to the Christian cleric, they plan to spend one week organizing a variety of sports activities with the goal of fostering peace and harmony among Nigerians.
Sports can be utilized as a deterrent by instilling qualities such as good sportsmanship, collaboration, respect, and communication skills, which can help to alleviate tensions and avert conflict.
Football, hockey, cricket, volleyball, baseball, tennis, badminton, table tennis, swimming, cycling, and a variety of other sports are popular worldwide and can be used to bring people together regardless of their cultural, traditional, or religious backgrounds.
“Several tribal tribes still play traditional games, and we hope to organize some so that we can use this opportunity to educate Nigerians about the need of peace and stability.”
Sport, he believes, may help achieve Sustainable Development Goal 16, which supports peace, justice, and strong institutions, in the present period of war and humanitarian disasters.
His organization, along with other concerned peace NGOs and civil society organizations, will host a friendly football match between Muslims and Christians, as well as other traditional believers, to promote peace and unity, he stated.

Similarly, Mr Nurudden Bello, the school director of the women’s hood school of health science in Kaduna, said that they have been sensitizing the general population about the need of peace in our society.
This was mentioned by Nurudden during a one-day lecture at the school titled “Importance of Peace and Harmony in Our Community.”
Sport brings nations together and fosters international peace since each country wants to invite the other to the World Cup. This fosters international camaraderie.
