Court sentences MAPOLY student to 7 months in prison for impersonation
HOTPEN – A student of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic (MAPOLY), Abeokuta in Ogun state, Adebowale Babatunde Ismail, has been sentenced to seven months imprisonment for impersonation.
The conviction of the Computer Science student was secured on Tuesday by the Ibadan zonal command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
The 24-year-old student was accused of criminal impersonation at federal high court, Ibadan, Oyo state
According to Section 22 (2) (b) (ii) of the Cybercrimes Act, 2015, the offence is arbitrary and punishable under section 22 (2) (b) of the same Cybercrime Act of 2015.
Adebowale said to have dubiously portrayed himself as John Dauherty through an undisclosed email address so as to achieve his fraudulent aim.
When arraigned, the defendant however asserted being guilty to the one-count charge against him.
Oluwatoyin Owodunni, prosecution counsel after the defendant appeal, examined the evidence of the case and implored the judiciary to pass sentence on Adebowale as charged.
Justice Uche Agomoh who presided over the case sentenced Adebowale to seven months imprisonment and also authorized that the he pay a sum of N1.4 million in restitution and forfeit one Toyota Rav 4 SUV and an iPhone 11pro mobile phone to the federal government.
