HOTPEN – The fight in Ukraine continues to rage with more casualties and strategic military manoeuvres in the struggle for relevance and supremacy in the global politics and economy. Recently, there is intense fighting near the towns of Siversk and Dekhmut in the north of the Russian occupied city of Donetsk.
President Zelenskyy says One million tonnes of grains have so far left the Ukrainian ports – a move very essential for Africa and the rest of the world. The food blockade has sent fears of food shortages and scarcity in the world and the spikes in their costs.
Now the Ukraine nuclear plant is back on line – with the reactors reconnected to the national grid. However, the Zaporizhzhia plant is still very risky as more targeted Russian attacks are still very likely; at a time when Russia has blocked UN documents on nuclear deals; a move that sent shivers in Europe and US.
As monsoon rains and floods hit Pakistan, with more than 30 million people displaced, there is a spark of water borne diseases. There is hunger and destitution, thus stressing the global food needs. There are strong indications that the future is uncertain, while the present is quite devastating.
Ukraine will soon receive a total of 6 mine hunting drones from the UK in order to detect explosives threats under water, the British defence ministry has said. This is coming at a time when the US claimed that one of it’s citizens has died recently in Ukraine, though no further details provided.
Further more, there is realistic possibility that Russia has increased its efforts in the Donbas area in an attempt to draw in or fix additional Ukrainian units, amid speculations that Ukraine is planning a major counter offensive.
As the war is raging and taking new dimensions, the world is recording every development, and history is examining and cross-examining each developments. In this case, Africa must be creative enough – for in economy there is need for knowledge, and need for wisdom in politics. And this is the time Africa should be wiser more than ever before.
