Senator Sulaiman Abdulrahman Kawu Sumaila, representing Kano South Senatorial District, has praised President Ahmed Bola Tinubu for his decision to grant autonomy to local governments.
Kawu Sumaila said the move by Asiwaju Ahmed Bola Tinubu would alleviate the suffering of the Nigerian masses.
Sumaila, in a statement, applauded the President for aligning with the Senate’s efforts to empower grassroots communities, which have long been plagued by hardships.
The Senator emphasized that local government autonomy will spur development, boost the national economy, and increase Internally Generated Revenue through agricultural value chains and commercial activities.
He also appealed to President Tinubu to address the challenges surrounding local government elections, which are often manipulated by politicians for personal gain.
Sumaila stressed that the Legislative and Executive arms of government have done their part in supporting local government autonomy and urged the Judiciary to exercise its constitutional rights in deciding on the matter.
He expressed gratitude to the Senate President and Deputy Senate President for allowing him to table the issue before the Senate and thanked his colleagues for their support.
Sumaila said “This development highlights the ongoing efforts to strengthen grassroots governance and address the challenges facing local communities in Nigeria.
He maintained that “The granting of autonomy to local governments is seen as a significant step towards empowering them to address the unique needs of their areas and promote sustainable development.”
