An agribusiness advocate, Mrs. Zulaihatu Labilwa Madugu, has called on governments at all level to invest in youth participation in agriculture through provision of farmland, affordable farm inputs and modern farming training.
Speaking with our correspondent in Gombe, she described agriculture as a reliable sector capable of reducing unemployment, poverty and food insecurity in Nigeria.
According to her, many youths are willing to engage in farming but are discouraged by lack of access to land, fertilizers, improved seeds and financial support.
“Farming may be stressful, but it is an honest and rewarding means of livelihood. With adequate support, many youths will embrace agriculture and become self-reliant,” she said.
Zulaihatu noted that involving more young people in agriculture would not only boost food production but also help address social problems caused by unemployment.
She stressed the need for practical training in modern farming, food processing, packaging and marketing, saying many farmers suffer losses due to poor branding and limited market access.
The agribusiness advocate also urged financial institutions and intervention agencies to provide soft loans and grants to young farmers to help expand their businesses, encouraged youths to see agriculture as a profitable venture capable of transforming their future and contributing to Nigeria’s economic growth.
