Ahead of the 2027 general elections, National Trustee of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Northwest Zone A, Comrade Abbas Ibrahim, has resigned from his position to pursue a political career, seeking for deputy governor of the Nigeria Labour Party in Kano State.
Abbas Ibrahim told Hotpen in Dutse shortly after the end of the National Executive Council meeting of NUJ held in Dutse, Jigawa State capital, citing ethical considerations and the need to avoid conflict of interest.
He said: “My decision to quit active unionism and venture into politics was driven by the need to maintain the ethical standards expected of him as a union leader.
“I am now contesting for the position of Deputy Governor of Kano State on the platform of the Labour Party.”
Comrade Abbas explained that his decision to join politics was motivated by his desire to contribute to the development of Kano State through public service and to answer the call from the public and other stakeholders within and at the national level.
He added that the Labour Party had unanimously endorsed him as its deputy governorship candidate, alongside Alhaji Hamisu San Turaki, who is the party’s governorship candidate in the state.
He thanked his fellow journalists and union members for the opportunity to serve and contribute to the development of the union, saying he remained grateful for the support and cooperation he received throughout his years of service.
