Irked by the spate cases of open defecation across the nation, 77,400 youths have voluntarily agreed to collaborates with the federal ministry of water resources with a view to fight with the menace through massive awareness and sensitization among the teeming populace.
The Minister of water resources, Engr. Suleiman Adamu disclosed this during launching of the programme Clean Nigeria Campaign, that the 100 youth who volunteered for the program were drawn across the 774 LGA in the country, added that they will be trained on how to communicate and demonstrate to the public on good sanitation and hygiene practices that can prevent people from Corona virus
Suleiman Adamu who was represented by Mr Olaya, the zonal Director in charge of North west zone, explained that Nigeria has reached 61 percentage in open defecation across the 774 LGA`s.
The statistic of 2019 according to the Minister, indicate that only five percent of the Nigerian population practiced proper hand washing with water and soap at critical time.
He further stated that about 61 percent of the households in Jigawa state were infected with diarrhea, pointed out that while 51 percent have no access to safety managed water as people in the state still practice open defecation.
The story in Jigawa find out that only 13.8 percent of its population comply with the basic sanitation service which underline the WASH situation in the state, while 18 percent of Jigawa population ignored the access to basic sanitation.
According to the commissioner of water resources, Alhaji Garba Hannun Giwa said they will sensitize policy makers at all level and ensures the provision of sanitation facilities in public places such markets, schools and motor parks by government and private organizations.
