CITAD, Traditional Rulers, Partner to Tackle Gender-Based Violence in Kano

HOTPEN – Centre for Information Technology and Development (CITAD), has partnered with the heads of traditional institutions in Kano state to tame the menace of Gender-Based Violence, especially in rural areas.
In a statement sent to HotPen and signed by the organization’s Admin and Documentation Officer, Mal. Buhari Abba said the move was aimed at seeking the full involvement of traditional leaders in the state to assist in ending the shadow of violence against the gender.
Buhari Abba was speaking when he led CITAD’s delegation to the palace of Emir of Gaya, His Highness, Alhaji (Dr) Aliyu Ibrahim Abdulkadir, for an advocacy visit and to intimate the traditional ruler on the dynamic progress being made by the Centre in curbing the act of violence against gender in Kano State.
Buhari Abba said: “CITAD with support from Ford Foundation had recently surveyed in 22 local government areas in Kano state on violence against women and children and the results showed that the practice is on the rise”.
According to him, “this negative outcome calls for deep involvement of the royal fathers across the state to curtail further occurrence”.
On his part, the Emir of Gaya, His highness Alhaji (Dr) Aliyu Ibrahim Abdulkadir commended CITAD for its interventions in the fight against gender violence particularly violence against women in the state”, he assured that traditional rulers will continue to support the center to sustain the campaign within the ambit of his power”.
The Emir condemned all forms of violent practices against women and girls in the State, vowing to bring such acts to an end.
He further assured the Centre that, his council will redouble its efforts to ensure violence against women and all other forms of gender discrimination and harmful traditional practices have come to an end in his emirate.
He opined that everyone should understand that violence against women and girls is unacceptable and will no longer be tolerated.
The emir called for a collective effort from all relevant authorities, including NGOs, to lend voices and tackle violence and other social vices plaguing women and children in Kano state.
