The Central Bank of Nigeria CBN has conducted a one day sensitization workshop to association of POS operators Zamfara state branch on the significance of eNaira and cashless policy program.
The workshop held at Maryam Conference Hall in Gusau the Zamfara state capital Thursday which was officially organized by the Association of POS operators Zamfara state branch.
In his address, the controller of CBN Gusau branch, Malam Buhari Abbas said one of the reasons for the introduction of eNaira policy and redesigning of some denomination of Nigerian currency by the Central Bank of Nigeria was to reduce large circulation of the currency in the hands of Nigerians.
Another reason according to him is, the eNaira, cashless policy and redesigning the N1000, N500, and N200 notes will serves as a yardstick in addressing corruption, insecurity and inflation in the country.
According to him, already the Central Bank of Nigeria has ordered commercial banks which include, Zenith, access, UBA , FCMB and first banks to despense new notes to the Association of POS operators in Zamfara state who registered with the five commercial banks as an agents for them to boost their business.
“I want to urge all members of the Association of POS Operators in Zamfara who registered with the aforementioned commercial banks to go direct to these banks and claim their new notes and also deposit the old notes in their possession which was approved by CBN.
He warned that any bank denied to listen to the members of POS should be reported to his office with immediate effect for necessary action”. He said
Abbas further revealed that it is an offence not to collect old Naira notes denomination before the 31st January as stipulated by CBN, warning that anyone found wanting in rejecting the old Naira notes as legal tender within transition period should be arrested by the police for necessary action.
He tasked POS operators in the state to ensure they collect old Naira notes from their customers during transition period till 31st January as stipulated by the apex Bank.
The controller tasked members of the Association of POS operators in Zamfara state to complement with federal government, CBN and commercial banks in their efforts to stabilize the nations economy.
