The Kano Peace Committee has called for political parties in Kano, Nigeria to promote peace and de-escalate tensions, especially during the upcoming gubernatorial election on March 18, 2023.
The Committee made the call on Thursday during a courtesy call visit to political actors in the state, Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje ,and Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso respectively.
“Our major concern over recent actions and statements made by politicians in the state, which have caused apprehension among the people.”
Speaking during the visit A.B Mahmoud SAN, who addressed the governor on behalf of the group said the call became pertinent in view of recent happenings in Kano especially during and immediately after the presidential and NASS Election
“We calling on the state government to provide security and a level playing field for all parties, and urged political supporters to eschew violence for the progress of the state.”
In his remark Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of kano appreciated the efforts of the committee’s and reiterated his commitment to ensuring peaceful elections in the state.
By his statement the head of secretariat of Kano Peace Committee Comrade Ibrahim Waiya said, they meeting with Stakeholders is in order to have a peaceful election of governor’s and state house of assembly coming of 18th this month.
He also added that the aim is to meet the police and INEC to convey the messages of the Stakeholders in order to ensure justice for all part during the conduct of the election.
The delegation also visited former Governor of the state and NNPP Presidential Candidate in the just concluded election Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and assured him of their resolved to ensure justice for all victims of political violence.
On his part the former presidential candidate of NNPP Dr Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso appreciated the effort of the committee towards ensuring Peace,
how ever he lamented over attacks on their supporters, noting that justice is the foundation of peace in every where.
Meanwhile the committee plans to use the one-week extension by INEC to advocate for peace and understanding among the parties and remind other stakeholders of their role in achieving peaceful elections.
