The Association of Kano Online Journalists has called on it’s members to uphold the journalistic code of ethics guiding the profession at all times.
This was contained in a press release by the Chairman of the association, Mr. Yakubu Salisu after a Congress meeting which took place on Saturday in Kano.
According to him, as professionals, they should always strive to feed the public with authentic information bearing in mind objectivity, fairness and the interest of the general public.
He said, at a time the social media space has become poluted with all sorts of information, as journalists with decades of experiences from conventional media, it is expected of them to dominate and take over the space deploying their wealth of knowledge.
Salisu assured the public and those seeking genuine information to feel at home with the various platforms belonging to the members of the association whom have made a name for themselves in the field of journalism before now.
He further added that as professionals, the Association shall continue to train and retrain it’s members on new skills which will further help in the course of their jobs.
He called on government, individuals and corporate bodies to help fight the tide of quackery in the field by identifying only with real journalists and not just anyone who decides to run a website, blog etc without any certificate in the field of journalism.
Furthermore, he called on those without any form of training or certificate in the field to stop parading themselves as journalists bringing bad name to the field advising them to enroll for certified programs in journalism if they must remain in the field to obtain at least some basic trainings.
