The Director of Agriculture, National Agricultural Biotechnology Development Agency (NABDA), Dr. Rose Gidado has urged the Federal Government to revive textile industries in the country to encourage local cotton production.
Gidado made the call while inspecting the 261 hectares of cotton farm owned by the former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Mr. Babachir Lawal, in Hong Local Government Area of Adamawa.
She said, reviving the textile industry in the country, would improve cotton production, job creation and increase Gross Domestic Product (GDP) .
She also called on the State’s government and wealthy individuals in the society, to provide a soft loan and improved seed varieties for farmers who were cultivating cotton.
“The loan interest should be low, and the farmers should also be supported with inputs.
“‘Bollgard 2’ seed variety is profitable and resistance to so many challenges more than the conventional seed we know, and the quality is superior, it can be exported to anywhere in the world, ” she said.
Mr. Ahmed Shelleng, the Manager of the farm, said that cotton production in the area has created jobs for residents of the area, some earn their living on the farm.
He called on the Federal Government to encourage cotton production through the provision of inputs and implements to the farmers who were in to cotton production.
