Sokoto State Governor, Ahmed Aliyu has signed into law, the bill for the establishment of the state Community Guard Corps to complement the efforts of conventional security Agencies, in the fight against insecurity bedeviling the state.
The Governor further stated that, the establishment of the Community Guard Corps by the state government is not in anyway trying to subvert the powers and responsibilities of the conventional security outfits stationed in the state, but rather to complement their efforts in fighting in issue of security.
According to the Governor , the new Community guards were expected to help the conventional security Agencies with intelligence information that would assist in the apprehension of criminals in their localities.
“The Community Guards are not Sokoto state government police personnel, they are only to provide useful and intelligence information that will lead to the arrest and prosecution of suspected criminals and nothing short of that” says the Governor.
“The conversational security Agencies should not see the new guard corps as rivals while conducting their constitutional responsibilities, but as sister Community security Agency working with them to achieve desired goals of fighting insecurity in the state.
While signing the documents the Governor said, it was part of his administration’s efforts to adopt a “community-driven” approach towards addressing security challenges facing the state.
“The very essence of this corps lies in community engagement, collaboration, and mutual respect for conventional security outfits, we are targeting the roots of insecurity in our state and Insha Allahu we will succeed,” Says the Governor.
The Governor while campaigning for Gubernatorial election went round the state where he witnessed the devastating effects of insecurity which made him to create the Community guard Corps as part of his nine points to combat insecurity and other terrorist around the state.
“As Community Guard Corps, you are expected to interact with the diverse communities around the state, you should be guided by your actions and decisions while facing a deadly enemy who has no respect or value for human life.
“Bandits have brought pains upon fathers, mothers, daughters and sons, and it is our religious and moral obligations to protect them. As a governor of the state, I assured you of my full support and that of the entire state as we work together to eradicate insecurity,” the governor averred.
The state government is recruiting 2000 able-bodied persons to serve in the new established Guard corps with the support of the traditional and religious leaders in the state.
“Each of the recruits, will undergoes regrouse certifications from their traditional and Community blesders with a view to ensure that, those selected to serve are of good character and mentally fit.
The new Community guards corps have since commence their two months training on weapons handling, intelligence gathering, Accidental discharge, public relations and psycological war fare at state NYSC orientation camp in Wamakko.
