There is controversy over the release of embattled Kano Tiktok skit maker Murja Ibrahim from prison custody before the date set for her bail hearing by a Sharia Court, which remanded last Tuesday.
Daily News 24 reports that Ms Kunya, who had been declared wanted alongside five others by the Kano State Hisbah Board, was arrested at Hotoro Tinshama area of the city.
The Tiktoter was nabbed allegedly following complaints her neighbours over her alleged immoral behaviour which included public nuisance, attempt to corrupt and recruit young girls into prostitution and sharing explicit material and vulgar language on social media.
After her arrest, she was arraigned at a Sharia Court in Gama ward of the city, where the judge, Malam Nura Yusuf Ahmed, remanded her in prison until Tuesday, 20 February, 2024 for hearing on her bail application.
Ms Kunya was remanded after she denied the charges read to her by the prosecutor of the case Aliyu Abideen.
But on Sunday, two days before adjourned date, reports emerged that Ms Kunya had disappeared from prison custody, prompting speculations on whether she had escaped.
However, a spokesman for the Kano Correctional Centre, Musbahu Kofar Nasarawa told Daily Nigerian that Ms Kunya did not escape custody, but was instead released by the court., which remanded her.
Mr Musbahu said the Tiktoker was released since Thursday, meaning that she spent only two days in custody instead of 7.
“It was a court that brought her to us for remand, and it was the same court that ordered us to release her,” he said.
Daily News 24 could not independently verify Mr Musbahu’s claim about the whether Ms Kunya was actually released by order of the court, however Nasiru Salisu Zango, a prominent journalist wrote on his Facebook page that the judge did not order the defendant’s release.
Mr Zango, a senior journalist at Freedom Radio wrote that “The prison authorities claim that the court sent an order for Murja’s release but sources from the court insists that the judge did not grant the defendent bail. What is happening?”.
