The resignation of Malam Aminu Ibrahim Daurawa as the head of Kano State Hisbah Board has ignited heated debates among the general public both within and outside Kano State.
Hotpen reports that Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf expressed dissatisfaction with the Hisbah’s approach to arresting individuals accused of immorality, citing concerns over their treatment of men and women during arrests.
During a meeting with Imams and other Islamic scholars, the governor emphasized the need for the Hisbah board to uphold Islamic values while respecting individual rights and ethical standards in their enforcement of morality.
Consequently, Sheikh Aminu Ibrahim Daurawa announced his resignation as the Commander General of Kano’s Hisbah Board, citing discouragement from Governor Abba’s remarks despite his efforts to promote societal morality. In a video shared on social media, Daurawa expressed his regret and wished the governor well in his leadership.
However, the general public has criticized Governor Abba Kabir’s statement, describing it as a public embarrassment and an insult to not only the Islamic cleric but also to society. Many have commended Daurawa’s resignation, viewing it as a safeguarding of his integrity.
Some clerics suggested that the governor should have addressed his concerns with the Hisbah Board privately rather than making public statements. The Friday mosque sermons largely condemned the governor’s remarks as uncalled-for and praised Daurawa’s decision to resign.
With public outrage continuing to dominate social media platforms, Governor Abba Kabir reportedly called an emergency meeting with the management of the Hisbah board at the government house to address the fracas.
London-based veteran journalist, Jafar Jafar, posted on his Facebook timeline, criticizing Governor Kabir for denying his advisers access to offer meaningful advice and urging him to strengthen his relationships with political appointees. Jafar also alleged that the governor had avoided discussions with Daurawa regarding the controversial TikToker, Murja Kunya, which led to further public scrutiny.
Jafar emphasized that Governor Abba Kabir’s criticism of the Kano Hisbah Board risk damaging his administration’s image and advised him not to disregard public interest in favor of personal agendas.
