Muhammadu Sanusi II has been reinstated as the Emir of Kano and is on his way back to the throne News Point Nigeria can authoritatively report.
Hotpen reports that, the 14th Emir of Kano, who fell out with ex-Governor Abdullahi Ganduje was dethroned on the 9th March, 2020.
Ahead of his deposition, the Kano State Emirs (Appointment and Deposition) Law was amended by the Ganduje administration in 2019, and four additional emirates were created – Rano, Karaye, Gaya, Bichi.
However, the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) controlled Kano House of Assembly repealed the law on May 23, 2024, paving the way for the abolishment of the emirates and changes introduced by the law under Ganduje.
According to a copy of the repealed bill sighted by this newspaper, “All offices created in the newly created five Emirates under the repealed principal law, dated 5th December, 2019 are hereby abrogated. All appointment made under the said repealed Principal Law dated 5th December, 2019 are hereby set aside.”
Credible sources told this newspaper that Governor Abba Yusuf would sign the bill into law, on Thursday, but as of the time of filing this report the governor had not appended his signature to the bill to make it a law but Muhammadu Sanusi has been briefed and officially asked to come back.
“Emir Sanusi is currently preparing for his return to the throne. Although he is not in town at the moment, we are expecting his return on Friday because he has been briefed and asked to come back,” one of the sources said.
Another source close to the Sanusi family told this newspaper that, ‘private jet booking has just been made and photographers close to the Sanusi family have been contacted for arrival arrangements’.
This newspaper understands that Sanusi is in Port Harcourt for the Rivers Investment Summit while preparations for his elegant return Friday are in full swing.
Speaking on the development, a lawyer of repute, Muhammad Bashir Usman, SAN, told News Point Nigeria that, “The law is clear on this, certainly with the passage of the Bill, Sanusi automatically stands reinstated. No need for confirmation, the thing to is wait for the Governor to assent to it.”
Adding his voice to the matter, the Commissioner for Youths and Sports, Adamawa State, Barrister Wali Yakubu, another seasoned lawyer said, “the previous law was repelled, therefore, Muhammadu Sanusi II is now the emir as the new law said, ‘Status quo should be maintained”.
