The crisis began after BAGCO’s management failed to fulfill its promise to increase salaries by the end of June, following a peaceful protest held in May.
The development angered the workers, who shut down company operations and resumed a peaceful protest at the company’s gate.
Speaking with one of the workers’ leaders, Jimoh Mohd of BAGCO, he openly expressed frustration on behalf of the staff, accused management of being unreliable after they told workers who were not willing to continue working without a salary increase to resign.
He vowed to continue the protest until management listens to their demands and immediately increases their pay as previously promised.
Mahrazu Muhd, another junior BAGCO staff member, stressed that refusing the pay increase is outright deception, warned that it could force them back on strike, shut down the company for a long time, and set back security and development in Kano State.
Mr. Samuel, one of the company’s labor union leaders, described the company’s leaders as disrespectful, vowed not to accept any agreement that is not in writing.
Effort to get a response from company management was unsuccessful.
An official who requested anonymity said they were in an emergency meeting at the time.
Hotpen reports that, it was on May 12, BAGCO workers in Kano staged a peaceful protest that led to the suspension of the company head, Mr. Ibenezer Oyebisi, and Mr. Momoh Kassim, who are the Head of Staff Welfare for the Kano branch.
The workers are calling on BAGCO management to urgently increase their salaries as promised during the May peaceful protest, also appeal to Kano State Governor Abba Kabir, and the Emir of Kano, Dr. Muhammad Sunusi II, to intervene in the matter and monitor the company’s activities to ensure justice and fairness between it and its workers.
