The Yellow Team on Thursday emerged champions of the Borno State Amputee Football Championship after edging the White Team 3-2 in a thrilling final played in Maiduguri.
The tournament, organised by the Borno State Amputee Football Programme with support from the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), showcased the resilience, talent and determination of athletes living with disabilities while promoting social inclusion through sports.
Speaking after the final, the programme coordinator, Mr Abba Bukar, described the competition as more than a sporting event, saying it was designed to empower persons with disabilities and provide a platform for them to demonstrate their abilities.
He commended Gov. Babagana Umara Zulum for supporting initiatives that promote the welfare and inclusion of persons with disabilities in the state.
Bukar also appreciated the ICRC, coaches, volunteers and other stakeholders for ensuring the success of the championship.
“The athletes have shown that disability is not inability. Their determination and achievements continue to inspire society,” he said.
Also speaking, the ICRC Physical Rehabilitation Project Manager, Mr Subhash Sinha, said amputee football serves as an important tool for physical rehabilitation, psychological recovery and social integration.
Mr Yusuf Mohammed, Director of Sports in the Borno State Ministry of Sports, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting amputee football, noting that sustained competitions would nurture talents capable of representing Nigeria at international events.
The championship ended with the presentation of the trophy to the victorious Yellow Team amid cheers from spectators and participants.
