Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe State today Thursday has launch the flag-off of the distribution of palliatives to about 120, 000 vulnerable persons across the 17 local government areas of the state, to provide more sucour to teeming populace.
In his speech during the Flag-off ceremony in Government house Damaturu, the governor said, As you are aware, this administration has provided numerous interventions through the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA). I am pleased to state that l have received favourable feedback from the previous distribution exercises, through direct and indirect monitoring mechanisms.
It is also gladdening that SEMA has adequately put the experience garnered over the years in the distribution of essential materials, and resettlement of displaced persons into practice to effectively achieve the desired goal by reaching out to those who truly deserve the support. I, therefore commend the management and staff of SEMA for living up to expectations of the government.
“The distribution we are about to launch is indeed massive, targeting 120, 000 vulnerable households to cushion the effects of the economic hardships, and to provide food to the vulnerable persons and others who are actually in need.
“We have procured over 50, 000 bags of assorted food items, including rice, Maize, Millet, and Sorghum for distribution in the 17 local government areas in the state.”
The distribution process is designed through a cluster of representatives of People Living With Disabilities, Mosques, Churches, and Orphanages, IDPs and other vulnerable groups selected across the 178 wards.
“l wish to commend the federal government of Nigeria through the NG-Cares, the North East Development Commission (NEDC), the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), and all other partners for complementing and supporting our effort towards providing relief to the citizenry.”
The Governor directed the State Emergency Management Agency to work closely with the security agencies to ensure safe transportation and distribution of the materials to the targeted beneficiaries. Government would deal ruthlessly with any act of sabotage or diversion of the materials.
The governor also directed the local government committees to ensure transparency and accountability, and with priority given to People Living with Disabilities, the weak and elderly persons, Nursing and expectant mothers, retirees, and low level civil servants.
He also convey the message of empathy and solidarity of this administration to the beneficiaries of this gesture, government will continue to support individuals and communities not only with immediate relief, but also to empower our citizens to overcome challenges, drive the state towards sustainable development, and food security.
He urge all relevant stakeholders, including Hon members of Yobe State House of Assembly, LGA chairmen, community leaders, civil society organizations, and other actors, to join hands in ensuring effective monitoring and distribution of food items to the most vulnerable persons in the state.
