Professor Jidda Juma’a of the Department of Language and Linguistics, University of Maiduguri, has called on Nigerians to stop blackmailing leaders for peace and progress to reign in the country.
Juma’a made the appeal at the annual general assembly and presentation of 1445 Islamic calendar and prayer time organised by the Adamawa Muslim Council in Yola.
He said leaders needed to be supported with prayers and guided for them to do what is necessary for citizens.
According to him, some challenges in leadership are from the citizens, hence the need for everyone to check himself and repent.
He also urged the Federal Government to come up with a Bill to regulate the affairs of clerics and advised the clerics to be united for progress.
According to him, this will help to have peace in the country as well as to address some challenges of insecurity.
He added that the Prophet Muhammad had prescribed respect for whoever becomes a leader.
Gov. Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa also called on citizens to continue to live in peace and unity for more development in all sectors of life in the state.
Fintiri, who was represented by Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Alhaji Auwal Tukur, said with peaceful coexistence and unity a lot of success and development could be achieved.
He appreciated the contribution of the council for preaching peace and unity, urging them to sustain the tempo.
Fintiri pledged to support the council to achieve its mandate in the state.
Malam Gambo Jika, the state Chairman of the council, explained that the event is an annual programme due to its significance in the life of Muslim faithful.
He said the calendar and prayer time are being used on a daily basis as a guide because of its importance.
Jika said that the council had executed many projects, including its secretariat complex, school and hospital.
He called on the Muslim faithful to contribute their part for more blessings from God in the world and hereafter.
